So here is Prescott's 9 month carseat picture, I can't believe how big and absolutely adorable he is.
So here is what we finally found out with Prscott. After going to the third ENT, he suggested we needed to take Prescott to an allergist. So we made an appointment and like always waiting to get in. After the horrible scratch test and blood work, everything came back NORMAL!Let's just say dealing with all of this and then some took me completely under. I couldn't sleep and looked like I was on the best diet around. So I finally called a good friend that I taught her daughter because I knew she had allergy type issues. It was scary how similar our kids stories were, the only difference was Prescott was clearing not having a problem gaining weight. She suggested I take him to a pediatric GI. Knowing I had nothing to loose, I made the appointment which like always is months out. I had also put my name on a waiting list for any cancellations. Well, let's just say someone up there knew I was at my breaking point and at this point in my life I couldn't handle anymore. I called on a Wednesday to schedule the appointment and they called me back on Friday and said they had a cancellation and the people ahead of me on the list couldn't make it. I started crying on the phone and I am sure the receptionist thought I was nuts but if she only knew what was on my plate at this time she would have understood. I knew this appointment opening was a tender mercy and I recognized it and I was so grateful because I needed this more than anyone really knew. So we took him to the pediatric GI, and for the first time he really listened to me and didn't think what was going on was crazy. Instead he told me that he felt like Prescott had eosinophilic esophagitis. Which means he has an allergic inflammatory condition of the esophagus. Which explains the difficulty swallowing, the heartburn and the eustachian tubes not draining causing the back to back ear infections. However, a scope is the only way to truly diagnose Prescott with EE and because of his age, he would have to be put under and it is an intense procedure. So our AWESOME GI doctor said he was going to treat him for eosinophilic esophagitis without doing the scope because he is 95% positive that is what he has and see if we can get him healthy. Then when he is a little older and the procedure is not so intense, we will do the scope. Dr. Mizell spent 3 hours listening and talking with us. He explained that this is also the reason that every time we tried something new like the goat's milk Prescott would do great. It takes his system anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks for his body to recognize he can't handle that food in his system. Which would then cause his esophagus to inflame making it hard to swallow. Then his poor ears would get infected because the eustachian tubes wouldn't drain from the inflammation. After the food has caused inflammation in his system, it takes weeks for it to get out of his system. So Prescott is back on Elecare formula and a very strict diet. He gets to try one food at a time and we are starting to see and understand how his body reacts to eosinophilic esophagitis. We can usually tell within the first 3 weeks if his system will be able to handle that food. If he can't handle it, then it can take up to 4 weeks to get back out of his system. But food is not the only factor, environmental allergies also play their role with Prescott's eosinophilic esophagitis. Which makes it a fun guessing game at our house. Prescott is doing great and is happy and this is the longest he has been healthy in his entire life. I have learned several things from these past couple of months. Trust yourself, no doctor knows better than a baby's mommy. Ignore stupid people and their dumb comments because they will never care to understand. You alone are your baby's advocate and you do whatever you have to do for your baby. I learned all of these lessons the hard way but my baby is finally healthy which makes everyone in our house happy, smiling and laughing again.Thursday, August 2, 2012
